Student Absences

Under the Education and Children’s Services Act 2019 (SA), schools are required to ensure that enrolled students are attending school or participating in an approved learning program and to maintain the appropriate attendance registers. Schools are also required to maintain the appropriate attendance registers for absentees.

Children of compulsory school age (six years and up to the age of sixteen years) residing in South Australia are required to be in full-time attendance at a government or registered non-government school unless exempted by the Minister.  Students of Compulsory Education age (between 16 and 17 years) are required to be in attendance at school or a combination of school and other approved training unless exempted by the Minister for Education, Training and Skills or relevant Delegate.​

Daily Absences

To advise the College of your child's absence please email absentee@portside.sa.edu.au or call 08 8341 5133. Please include your child/rens name/s, absence date/s and the reason for their absence.

  • Absences - Greater than 5 days but less than 12 months

  • Family Travel/Holiday (up to 12 months)

  • Ongoing Medical (up to 1 month)

  • Other/Conditional/Home Education (up to 1 month)

A Form A must be completed and provided to the College prior to the absence occurring for the exemption to be approved.  Please complete the Form A online via this link, you will be asked to verify your email address as part of this process.

Absences - Overseas exchange/Elite sports and absences more than 12 months​

 

  • Overseas exchange

  • Family Travel/Holiday (more than 12 months)

  • Elite sports

  • Full time employment (30+ hrs for 15 year old/25+ hrs for 16 year old)

  • Full time non-School education ​
